Talent Buyers Connect | Arnstar

We got a chance to kick it with Arnstar who recently starred in the Roxanne movie on Netflix. Get to know this future superstar.

Tell us a little bit about you.

Arnstar is a fun, loving, energetic guy who loves to share his time with people and creating unforgettable moments. I am about oneness. I am about community. I am about progress. In a nutshell, I am about having fun, and also getting the work done.

What is more important to you acting or music?

Music is my first love before I even knew it to be considered a talent or gift. I was singing and dancing as a kid for the pure joy of it. I would later begin to write poetry which turned in to rapping thanks to my environment. When I look in retrospect, I can see the acting ability from when I watched movies I would capture the characteristics of what’s happening in the scene. I was that annoying cousin you couldn’t watch a movie with because I would repeat word for word. Lol

How did you land the role as MC Shan in the Roxanne film?

My team got wind of an audition for the role. When I heard about it, I knew I needed to be a part of this project. I said to myself if I see another actor act this part out I am going to be mad. Hip-hop is in my veins, and this role needed to be portrayed by an authentic conduit. I stepped up to the challenge and landed my first major part in an epic film about a true story of a legend, Roxanne Shante.

What separates your music from other artists?

The most obvious stand out from my music is that it’s 100% clean. There is no dirty version; there is always a clean version. I choose not to use profanity in my music. I have a message, and I choose to convey with such audacity as to go against the grain. However, I still manage to keep a bounce, a flow and the authenticity that translates seamlessly. Also, in such a time where the south has a heavy influence, you may find that I am truer to my New York roots. I feel that it is important, even though time is changing, this region needs to be well-represented understanding that New York is where it started with much respect and love to everyone else doing their thing as well. Also, I am very versatile. You can hear anything from consciousness, or party music which is more prominent in my catalog, and maybe even a mixture of the two in the future.

What keeps you motivated to keep working in the entertainment industry because we know it can be difficult at times?

My goal is to cut through the airwaves by using the cultures purest form of expression. Hip-hop was founded on peace, love, unity and safely having fun. As long as I am in the game that is what you are going to get from me, first and foremost. The difficulty you speak of is the lack of authentic culture being displayed. I came to change the narrative.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in entertainment?

I believe it was when I turned sixteen. I was in art class, and my teacher played a documentary called “Style Wars.” The documentary was about graffiti aka “writing” in the 80s. It briefly covered the other elements of hip-hop, and when it got to the breaking part, I saw my father (Kippy Dee of the legendary Rock Steady Crew). I made the teacher pause the video, and when it was confirmed that it was my dad on the screen, I knew Hip-Hop was what I was born to do.

What music artists inspire you today and when you were growing up?

My biggest musical influence outside of my immediate family is Michael Jackson. The approach, his style, and his essence were so captivating. A lot of my core base beliefs even outside of music were influenced or inspired by him. MJ will forever be the king.

Is it tough doing music and acting at the same time?

It’s not tough. I’m usually excited about challenges. However, acting and music have been a seamless blend so far. Once scheduling and timing are set, things tend to transition smoothly. Something I am happy about.

Does the internet and social media really help you with your goals?

Always. My team and I went viral recently and continued to do so which helps us discover new fans on a weekly basis. It also allows me to keep the freedom to thrive as an independent artist.
